Dr. Oluwafunke Esther Aduwo is a sociologist, social researcher, and development-oriented scholar with experience in teaching, research, community service, project management, and academic administration. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, and a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
Her professional career began in a non-governmental organization before progressing into tertiary education, where she has developed extensive experience in teaching, research, administration, and academic mentorship. Her major areas of interest include gender and development, sustainable development, technological innovation, technology adoption, agricultural innovation, health, and social and behavioural change.
Dr. Aduwo has developed a multidisciplinary research profile covering gender and development, sustainability, technology adoption, agricultural innovation, health, sociology, and social and behavioural change. She is experienced in qualitative research methodologies and has contributed to research design, fieldwork coordination, data collection, qualitative data analysis, research training, technical report writing, and project management.
A major area of her scholarly interest is gender and sustainable development. Her work recognizes that development and environmental sustainability cannot be achieved without addressing gender inequalities and ensuring meaningful participation of women and men in decision-making processes. Her work also examines the significance of gender in the transition towards a greener and more sustainable society, emphasizing that environmental sustainability requires not only technological solutions but also social inclusion, equity, and equal access to opportunities.
Dr. Aduwo’s research highlights the opportunities that gender-inclusive approaches can create, including greater women's participation in environmental governance, access to green technologies, sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and emerging green economic opportunities. At the same time, she advocates approaches that recognize the different social positions, responsibilities, opportunities, and constraints experienced by women and men and that promote equitable participation in environmental and development initiatives.
Another important dimension of Dr. Aduwo's research is agricultural technology and innovation. She has participated in research examining technology-enhanced irrigation systems for food security. Her work considers socioeconomic, cultural, gender-specific, and institutional factors influencing the adoption and sustainability of innovative agricultural technologies. Particular attention is given to issues such as technology costs, operational expenses, access to credit, energy requirements, post-harvest challenges, and other constraints affecting farmers. This research complements her interest in green development by demonstrating how sustainable technologies can contribute to improved agricultural productivity and livelihoods when barriers to equitable adoption are addressed.
Dr. Aduwo has also participated in multidisciplinary research projects involving partnership and joint learning, research and advocacy, education and training, and institutional strengthening. Her professional responsibilities have included research planning, development of research instruments, fieldwork organization, qualitative interviews, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, data analysis, researcher training, and technical reporting. These experiences have strengthened her ability to manage complex research projects and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
As an academic, Dr. Aduwo is committed to teaching, mentorship, and student development. She has worked with students, providing academic guidance and research mentorship. She encourages students to develop critical thinking, methodological competence, independent inquiry, and an understanding of how social research can be applied to real-world problems.
Beyond research and teaching, she has contributed to academic administration and institutional development, including programme coordination, student advising, examination-related responsibilities, departmental committees, academic planning, and research coordination. Her experience demonstrates her commitment to strengthening academic programmes and creating an enabling environment for teaching, learning, research, and student development.
Dr. Aduwo's professional interests also extend to criminology, security studies, violence, sexual and gender-based violence, social control, and other contemporary social problems. Her multidisciplinary approach enables her to examine these issues through the lenses of social structure, gender relations, institutional practices, and inequality.
