OWSD has worked with many different individuals and organizations over the years. For our fellowships programme we have depended on very generous funding from Sida, who have provided full scholarships since 1997. We depend also on the structural, financial and administrative support of both TWAS and ICTP, and on the legal support and structure of UNESCO. The Italian government, as major donors to TWAS and ICTP, provide the office infrastructure so that OWSD headquarters can operate. We have benefitted from the expertise and networks of organizations working in the same building such as IAP and IAMP and have established important projects with them. We also work closely with the network of scientific institutions in Trieste (Italy) and the surrounding region where our headquarters are based. The Elsevier Foundation has generously sponsored our awards programme since 2010 and we work closely with TWAS and The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to deliver a prestigious award to each of five brilliant women scientists each year.
In-kind contributions have also always been crucial to our success and we have established agreements with a series of host institutes in developing countries who provide facilities and supervision for our PhD fellows to ensure that their studies are effective.

ICTP-East African Institute for Fundamental ResearchRwanda

Located on the University of Rwanda, Kigali campus, ICTP-EAIFR is a vibrant, international hub of advanced education and research, poised to become one of the most important physics institutes in Africa. It is a partner institute of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), and is also a Category 2 UNESCO institute.
ICTP-EAIFR was developed in response to a need in Rwanda and the region for both masters and doctoral degrees in various areas of physics, both fundamental and applied. It is planned that at any given time there will be 50 or more MSc students while the PhD programme is still to be determined.
In addition to a graduate school, the institution will have at least five research scientists on staff. When it is fully operational, there will be approximately 15 postdoctoral fellows. It is expected to act as a vibrant hub for visiting scientists from around the world, so that scientists from the continent can discuss and collaborate with others from further afield. This will also allow the students to make contact with active scientists and better their chances for obtaining PhD or postdoctoral positions in other countries.
The institute will host approximately five scientific meetings or schools a year, some of those in collaboration with the ICTP. Furthermore, it is expected to act as a node for various physics networks in Africa.
ICTP-EAIFR is a moment's walk away from the University of Rwanda's departments of physics and mathematics, with which it enjoys close collaboration.
International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org
ILRI through its graduate fellowship program provides opportunities to young scientists and graduate fellows globally to undertake quality research-for-development (R4D) within ILRI projects. The fellows are able to access ILRI’s cutting edge research facilities, receive mentorship from ILRI scientists while at the same time make a valuable contribution within the following broad ILRI PROGRAM areas:

The Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GSCAAS)China
The Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (GSCAAS) focuses on agricultural research and rural development through technological advancement and offers 53 PhD programmes and 65 Masters programmes in four key areas: agriculture, natural sciences, engineering and management science, covering 17 major disciplines, of which 10 are at PhD level (biology, ecology, crop science, horticulture, agricultural resources and environment, plant protection, animal science, veterinary, agrostology and agricultural economics) and 17 at Masters level (atmospheric science, biology, ecology, agricultural engineering, environmental sciences and engineering, food science and engineering, crop science, horticulture, agricultural resources and environment, plant protection, animal science, veterinary, forestry, agrostology, management science and engineering, agricultural economics and library information and archive management).
GSCAAS provides its students with access to the facilities of 39 research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) located throughout China. As of 2015, there are more than 4300 graduate students, inlcuding over 150 foreign students coming from more than 40 countries.
The University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS)China
The University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is a higher education institution focusing on graduate education. With four campuses in Beijing and five education centers outside the capital city,
UCAS is also backed by more than 100 CAS institutes throughout China specializing in all branches of the natural and engineering sciences. UCAS implements a two-layer education system whereby course work is carried out at the Beijing campuses, while research work is primarily carried out at the various CAS institutes. At present, there are over 40,000 graduate students at UCAS, of whom 50% are doctoral students.
To date, UCAS has conferred masters and doctoral degrees to more than 109,000 students.
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)Italy
TWAS is an international scientific academy located in Trieste, on the campus of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). Since its foundation in 1983, TWAS has been promoting scientific capacity and excellence in the South, by offering several research opportunities, ranging from Ph.D. fellowships to postdoctoral scholarships and research grants, as well as by managing South-South and South-North partnerships in science and technology.
Through such initiatives, TWAS pursues its main goal: helping build political and scientific leadership for science-based sustainable development in the developing world.
TWAS The World Academy of Sciences

TWAS - The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries - is a global science academy based in Trieste, Italy, working to advance science and engineering for sustainable prosperity in the developing world.
TWAS was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world, under the leadership of Abdus Salam, the Pakistani physicist and Nobel laureate.
TWAS has some 1,100 elected Fellows from 90 countries; 15 of them are Nobel laureates. About 85% come from developing nations, and the rest are scientists and engineers from the developed world whose work has had a significant impact in the South. TWAS and its partners offer nearly 500 fellowships per year to scientists in the developing world who want to pursue PhDs and post-doctoral research. TWAS prizes and awards are among the most prestigious given for scientific work in the developing world.
OWSD and TWAS
OWSD is based at the TWAS offices in Trieste, Italy and the TWAS executive director underwrites all OWSD programmes.
The idea to set up what was then a 'third world' organization for women in science was first discussed at a conference convened by TWAS and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Trieste from 3 to 7 October 1988. 218 leading women scientists from 63 developing countries attended the "Conference on the Role of Women in the Development of Science and Technology in the Third World" and as a direct outcome of the meeting, a study group met in March 1989 to look at the possibility of creating an organization specifically for women scientists from the developing world. It was decided to establish the then named Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) and to adopt a constitution for the organization.
OWSD continues to work very closely with TWAS. The OWSD executive board often meets at TWAS headquarters and new programmes and initiatives are often developed with input fom TWAS staff. The OWSD Programme Coordinator attends all TWAS annual meetings and there is an annual TWAS-OWSD Advisory Panel which meets so that each organization can recommend to the other ways in which they can improve their operations in order to increase the number and quality of women in science.
