Technology is often built with men in mind, leading to a range of gender biases. For example, many cleaning robots are designed with feminine traits, reinforcing outdated stereotypes. AI systems, which should be neutral, are often male-centric, whether it’s in voice assistants that default to male tones or algorithms that make it hard to track the contributions of women in academia. In fact, AI translations can often be biased toward male-centered language, and devices such as wearables or medical technologies are frequently tailored to fit male bodies, leaving women at a disadvantage. OWSD members are working to challenge these imbalances by designing tech that better reflects and serves everyone.
