Sustainable Cities and Communities
Cities are often designed without considering women’s needs, despite their crucial role in community health and well-being. Women typically make short, local journeys, often with children, for tasks like visiting the sick or buying food. With lower spending power than men, women rely more on in-kind support. They are also more vulnerable to pollution and heat, and depend on safe play spaces, shade, and bike paths. OWSD members are developing solutions to address these needs, such as an app for identifying safe spaces at night and coffee/cleaning stations near markets with running water.
